GSFC was founded in 1962, and its plants began producing fertilizers in 1967. GSFC became well-known for its groundbreaking achievements throughout its first decade of operation. To mention a few, it was the country's first joint-sector industrial complex, as well as the first corporation to set up fertilizer plants within two years of receiving the necessary approvals. It was also the first industrial initiative to secure farmers' direct and active equity participation, the first fertilizer unit to receive help from IDBI's help Fund, and the first company to use the Steam Naphtha Reforming process for ammonia production.
